The Edo State government has finalized plans to promote over 8,000 public school teachers, recruit 600 new educators, regularize qualified contract staff, raise the minimum wage to N75,000, and invest in university funding, infrastructure, and technical education to strengthen the overall education sector.

allscho The Edo State government has announced plans to promote over 8,000 teachers across public schools in the state, as part of efforts to enhance motivation and educational outcomes.
Dr. Paddy Iyamu, the state’s Commissioner for Education, shared the development with journalists in Benin City on Wednesday. He revealed that all necessary procedures for the promotions have been completed, and implementation is imminent.
According to Iyamu, the promotion initiative aims to boost morale and encourage better performance among teachers. He further stated that teachers would benefit from the recently approved N75,000 minimum wage announced by Governor Monday Okpebholo during the 2025 May Day celebration.
Dr. Iyamu also noted that the state is reviewing the status of contract-based teachers under the EdoStars program. The aim, he said, is to regularize appointments for qualified individuals, ensuring only the most competent are retained in the system—because, as he put it, “the quality of our teachers reflects in the quality of our children.”
In addition to the promotions, the government is recruiting 600 new educators—500 for basic and senior secondary schools, and 100 for Technical Colleges. This move, according to the commissioner, is meant to strengthen the education workforce and ensure that students not only earn certificates but also acquire relevant technical skills for self-employment and competitiveness in the job market.
Highlighting recent strides by Governor Okpebholo’s administration, Iyamu pointed to the significant increase in monthly subvention to Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma—from N41 million to N500 million. He also mentioned the successful induction of 128 medical and 810 nursing graduates of AAU, whose ceremonies were previously delayed.
Moreover, the government has embarked on extensive renovation of schools across the three senatorial districts, along with the provision of essential learning materials such as furniture and textbooks.
These initiatives underscore the state’s commitment to elevating education standards and creating a robust system that prepares students for both academic success and practical life challenges.
