Education consultant Alex Onyia sparked outrage after sharing a photo of a dilapidated UNN male hostel, questioning how the university could show such poor infrastructure despite receiving ₦2.56 billion in TETFund allocations.

Education advocate Alex Onyia has sparked widespread concern after posting a disturbing image of a male hostel at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN). Sharing the photo on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Onyia condemned the dilapidated condition of the hostel, calling it a clear sign of the broader decline in Nigeria’s higher education infrastructure.

Poor Conditions Despite Billion-Naira Funding
Onyia pointed out that UNN had recently received N2.56 billion from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund). Yet, according to him, the condition of the hostel reveals a troubling disconnect between the funding received and the actual state of student facilities.
“Here’s the recent TETFund allocation for UNN (N2.56 billion). Look at what they achieved with it in the male hostel. It’s a shame!” — Alex Onyia
The post quickly went viral, fueling intense discussions across social media platforms.
Public Reaction
The shared image drew sharp criticism from students, alumni, and education observers, many of whom echoed Onyia’s frustration.
@KaroBlvk commented:
“Nigeria’s education system has been defeated! It started when lecturers failed students for not buying textbooks.”
Another user, @aprilbox, added:
“This is the environment expected to produce engineers who’ll provide 24/7 electricity, yet they’ve never even lived with power themselves.”
Ongoing Concerns About Transparency
The situation has raised serious questions about how federal funds are being managed in Nigerian universities. Onyia’s post adds to growing demands for greater transparency and accountability in how public institutions utilize resources meant to improve learning conditions.
