Young African Boy Wins $1.4 Million Scholarship to 4 US Universities, Set to Pursue Computer Engineering Degree

Tyrone Iras Marh, a young Ghanaian, won a $1.4 million scholarship to study Computer Engineering at four US universities, choosing the University of Pennsylvania, after successfully fighting for his right to wear Rastafarian dreadlocks in school and advocating for inclusive education.

Tyrone Iras Marh, a young Ghanaian, has been awarded a $1.4 million scholarship to study Computer Engineering at four prestigious universities in the United States: Duke University, Williams University, the University of Pennsylvania, and Franklin & Marshall College. Tyrone shared his achievement on Twitter, reflecting on his journey from Achimota School, where he fought for the right to wear his Rastafarian dreadlocks, sparking national and global debates on individual rights and education.

Supported by his father and a nationwide movement, Tyrone challenged the school’s rules and won a court case that highlighted the importance of inclusive education and inspired others to stand against discrimination. After receiving multiple offers, Tyrone chose to attend the University of Pennsylvania for his bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering.

He expressed his gratitude to his family, especially his father and sisters, as well as to the CEO of AikinsConsult, who guided him through the SAT and college application process, and the Founder & President of Young Achievers Foundation Ghana, who assisted with his application. Tyrone also acknowledged the broader support from Child Rights International, his dedicated lawyers, and others who stood by him.

As Tyrone embarks on his new chapter at the University of Pennsylvania, he carries with him the lessons of resilience, advocacy, and gratitude, aiming to make a difference through his studies and maintain his connection to Ghana.
