Cursory: Two Chrisland School students, Oluwabukolami Adeyemi and Mmesomachukwu Okwonkwo, excelled in Cambridge exams and credit their success to teachers, guardians, and faith. Adeyemi topped the Cambridge AS-Level Law, and Okwonkwo achieved the highest score in English IGSCE as a Second Language. They plan to pursue law and business management in higher education.

Two students, 18-year-old Oluwabukolami Adeyemi and 17-year-old Mmesomachukwu Okwonkwo, from Chrisland School in Lagos, recently achieved top rankings in Cambridge examinations.
They attribute their remarkable success to their faith in God and the dedicated support of their teachers and guardians at the school. Miss Adeyemi excelled in the Cambridge International AS-Level Law Examination, while Miss Okwonkwo achieved the highest score in the English International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGSCE) as a Second Language.
Both students have aspirations to pursue higher education, with Miss Adeyemi aiming for a career in law and Miss Okwonkwo looking to study Business Management.
They described their exam experiences as wonderful. Miss Adeyemi, originally from Ega in Kogi State, recounted her educational journey, including attending Chrisland School from the age of one and later enrolling at Chrisland Predegree College to prepare for university admission abroad.
She expressed her surprise and gratitude for receiving recognition from the British Council and Cambridge International Assessment Education for her outstanding achievements in the Cambridge International AS level Law and AS Level Psychology.
Discussing her aspirations in an interview with PREMIUM TIMES, Miss Adeyemi expressed her lifelong passion for matters related to “civil and economic justice.”
She envisions contributing to society by providing pro-bono legal services as a lawyer, viewing this as a solid foundation for a potential career in politics. She hopes “to hold leadership positions in Nigeria and give back to the society that has helped bring me up,” Miss Adeyemi said.
She thanked the school management for investing time, energy, and “the winning spirit” in them, saying the school principal, who she described simply as Mrs Agomoh, would always give detailed assessments of each student “right on the assembly ground.”
“Academically, I would say the lecturers were intentional about everybody’s individual journey. So when I sat in class I never felt like a teacher was teaching in class, I felt that my teacher was teaching me. The academic experience was very intentional…,” she said.
In her perspective, Miss Okwonkwo expressed her enduring passion for business and her willingness to pursue a degree in Business Management at the university.
As she prepares to resume her studies abroad, she aspires to secure an internship opportunity to acquire valuable skills.
She said: “I prefer Business Management because it is something I am passionate about and I felt I could do it very well. I started a small business when I was in 7 years old it was something I loved doing. I also feel that business management is very versatile. So in a world where artificial intelligence is emerging more and more, you want to take a course that is versatile and you can move around with it.”
Miss Okwonkwo, who took examinations in Mathematics, Business Studies, ICT, Economics, and Biology, highlighted that her outstanding performance extended beyond English.
Discussing her exam preparations, she, originally from Anambra State, mentioned that their school rigorously prepared them with a range of activities, including frequent tests using past questions from the Cambridge website.
She said; “Our teachers would make us pick a few topics on essay writing and group us into teams. Within those teams, they would teach other classmates other subjects. I think that was what really helped.
“I would treat the past questions one by one until I covered most of them. That way I was able to get familiar with the pattern of the examination which made me very comfortable during the examination.”
To celebrate their achievement, Miss Adeyemi and Miss Okwonkwo joined over 60 young Nigerians who were recently acknowledged and honored by the British Council in Lagos for their exceptional performance in both the June and November 2022 sessions of the examinations.
At a ceremony in Lagos, the British Council presented these students with the British Council Recognition and Outstanding Cambridge Learner Award (BROCLA).
Speaking at the event, Juan Visser, the Regional Director for Cambridge International Education, emphasized that these learners undertook identical examinations to their peers worldwide and emerged as the top performers in the global assessment.
“The Cambridge exams set in Nigeria are the same as those taken in the UAE, Singapore, England, France, and South Africa. So, it’s an identical exam taken under strict exam conditions. It means these learners are competing on an equal playing field with other learners globally and they’ve done fantastically well,” he said.
