Timilehin Adetoye Toromade, an 18-year-old medical student at Obafemi Awolowo University, died in his sleep, prompting an investigation and condolences from the university community.

The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) community is in mourning following the sudden death of Timilehin Adetoye Toromade, an 18-year-old 300-level student of the College of Health Sciences, Department of Medicine and Surgery. Toromade reportedly died in his sleep in the early hours of Tuesday, January 6, 2026.
The university’s management has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Toromade’s death, working closely with relevant authorities to establish the facts. The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Simeon Bamire, expressed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, describing the loss as a tragedy beyond adequate words.
Toromade, with matriculation number CLI/2022/133, was believed to have died around 2 a.m., as one of his roommates reportedly said he opened the door for another occupant at that time. The university has assured the public that it is taking all necessary steps to support students and staff affected by the incident.
Professor Bamire appealed to students, staff, alumni, and friends of the institution to remain calm, compassionate, and prayerful, while upholding the values of empathy and solidarity associated with the university. The university community has committed the soul of the departed student to God, praying for strength and comfort for his family and all those affected by the loss. ⁴
This incident has sparked concerns about mental health support systems on campus, echoing a similar incident in August 2025 when a medical student took his own life after failing exams. The university has emphasized the importance of seeking help and support when facing academic or personal challenges.
