Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has been struck by tragedy following the reported suicide of a Dentistry student, Ajibola Ibitayo, allegedly triggered by his recent academic performance.
According to a statement released on Wednesday, August 13, by Adebayo Idris, the President of the Dentistry Students’ Association, the incident occurred shortly after examination results were published on August 12.
“It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of one of our colleagues in the Faculty of Dentistry,” the statement read.
“We received the heartbreaking news that he took his own life shortly after the release of his examination results.
This loss is not only the departure of a bright young mind but also a painful reminder of the silent struggles many students endure. As an association, we are deeply devastated. We extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, classmates, and everyone who knew him.”
The association president further urged students to look after one another and seek help when needed, stressing that mental health should be treated with the same importance as physical well-being.
“Mental health matters. No one should ever feel alone in their struggles.”
If you or someone you know is experiencing emotional distress, please reach out to a mental health professional or contact a suicide prevention helpline. You are not alone.
