To end a months-long teachers’ strike, the six FCT Area Councils have voluntarily agreed to allocate 10% of their internally generated revenue for six months to settle salary arrears and allowances, following a meeting with Minister Nyesom Wike, teachers’ unions, and student representatives.

In an effort to resolve the prolonged strike by public school teachers, the six Area Councils within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have agreed to forfeit 10% of their internally generated revenue (IGR) for six months.
The decision followed a closed-door meeting on Thursday, hosted by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike in Abuja. Present were representatives of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), and the Area Council chairmen.
Teachers have been on strike for more than three months, demanding the full implementation of a tripartite agreement reached in December 2024. Their demands include:
- A minimum wage of ₦70,000
- Salary arrears of 25–35%
- A 40% peculiar allowance
- ₦35,000 Federal Government wage award
- Outstanding promotion arrears
Chairman of Abaji Area Council, Abubakar Abdullahi, admitted the decision was not ideal for the councils, but necessary to bring an end to the industrial action.
“Our entire IGR for six months has been committed to this,” he said. “We are appealing to the NUT to consider this move in good faith and call off the strike for the sake of the students.”
Although Minister Wike lacks the legal mandate to compel the councils to divert their revenue, Abdullahi clarified that the agreement was reached voluntarily.
“We collectively agreed to allocate 10% of our IGR to the NUT for six months,” he added.
NANS President Olushola Ladoja explained that teachers insisted on receiving at least 70% of the owed entitlements. After calculations, it was determined that the 10% IGR contribution could cover that amount. A committee was also formed to evaluate and address the remaining issues within two weeks.
“The Minister appealed to the union to suspend the strike while we work out the rest,” Ladoja said.
FCT NUT Chairman, Abdullahi Shafas, confirmed that the union’s state executive council would meet to deliberate on the resolutions before making a final decision regarding the strike suspension.
