The Federal Government, through NEMA, distributed food supplies to 41 households affected by the Jos school building collapse, which claimed 22 lives and injured 54, to alleviate the suffering of survivors and victims’ families.

The Federal Government, through the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), on Tuesday, distributed food supplies to the families of victims and survivors of the Jos school building collapse.
The tragic incident at Saint Academy School occurred on July 12, 2024, resulting in 22 deaths and 54 injuries.
NEMA’s Director-General, Zubaida Umar, stated that the food distribution was meant to alleviate the suffering of survivors and the families of those who lost loved ones. Mrs. Umar, represented by NEMA’s North Central Coordinator, Eugene Nyelong, emphasized that the agency had been actively involved in the rescue efforts from the outset.
She described the building collapse as a deeply emotional experience for both parents and NEMA. “We extend our heartfelt sympathy and condolences to the injured and to the families of those who lost their lives,” she said.
Mrs. Umar further explained that after conducting an assessment following the search and rescue operations, victims were evacuated to various hospitals. Last week, medical supplies were delivered to the hospitals that treated the injured. “Today, we are here to provide support to the parents and guardians of those affected by the collapse. A total of 41 households will benefit from these essential food items,” she added.
The Executive Secretary of the Plateau State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Sunday Abdu, expressed gratitude to the Federal Government for its support. Mr. Abdu, represented by the Director of Finance and Supply, Samson Dimlong, commended the Federal Government and NEMA for offering relief to the affected families.
He remarked, “While the incident was beyond our control, this assistance will bring comfort to the families. SEMA has been collaborating with NEMA to prevent and mitigate disasters in the state. This timely intervention is appreciated, and we look forward to continued support in times of need.”
The Chairman of the school’s Parent-Teacher Association, Macben Onye, also expressed gratitude to the government and stakeholders for their ongoing support since the day of the tragedy.
In an emotional statement, Ifeyinwa Okwubanego, mother of Christabel Okwubanego who died in the collapse, shared her grief, saying, “Life has never been the same without my beloved daughter.”
