A five-story building under construction at Dennis Memorial Grammar School in Onitsha collapsed early yesterday morning.
A source reported that the building fell around 4 a.m. with a loud crash that reverberated throughout the area. “The incident occurred at about 4 a.m. The entire structure collapsed into rubble, causing a significant tremor in the vicinity.”
“There were likely no casualties since it was too early for workers to be present. The school operates as a boarding institution, so students might have been affected if it were not a public holiday.”
The cause of the collapse is yet to be determined, but onlookers speculated that substandard materials might have been used in construction.
The collapsed structure, known as the Centenary Building, was being funded by the school’s Old Boys Association for the upcoming centenary celebration of Dennis Memorial Grammar School, also known as DMGS, which is owned by the Anglican Communion. The school is renowned for producing distinguished professionals, including businessman Obinna Iyiegbu (Obi Cubana), who is one of the project’s financiers.
