At this year’s Vaal University of Technology (VUT) autumn graduations, one success story stands out: that of Ms. Lebohang Esther Sebolai.
Her journey from a cleaner to a graduate with a National Diploma in Human Resource Management (M+3) is not just remarkable but also inspiring.
Starting as a cleaner at VUT in 2011, Esther never imagined she would one day graduate, let alone in the same hall she once cleaned.
Reflecting on her journey, she credits Prof. Irene Moutlana, the former VUT Vice-Chancellor and Principal, for encouraging service workers like herself to pursue education. In 2015, Esther enrolled for her diploma, completing it in 2023 after nine years of perseverance.
Balancing her roles as a mother, student, and worker was challenging, with missed lectures and failed modules. Yet, Esther remained determined. She also found inspiration in her colleague, Ms. Nokhuthula Sambo, who achieved an Advanced Diploma. Esther’s success motivated her colleagues, showing them what dedication and hard work can achieve.
In recognition of her achievement, the VUT Alumni Relations Office presented Esther with a fashionable VUT-branded gold shirt, symbolizing admiration and respect. VUT celebrates employees like Esther who pursue lifelong learning.
