Oluwagbemiga Olayinka Babatunde, a first-class Linguistics graduate from the University of Ibadan, overcame academic and financial challenges through resilience, self-discipline, and mentorship, ultimately becoming the Faculty of Arts’ best-graduating student in 2024.

Oluwagbemiga Olayinka Babatunde, a first-class graduate of Linguistics from the University of Ibadan, serves as a remarkable example of resilience and determination. Achieving a 3.83 CGPA on a 4.0 scale, his journey to academic excellence was marked by personal and financial challenges, mentorship of hundreds of students, and a commitment to growth. In an interview with Korede Badmus, Oluwagbemiga reflects on the experiences that shaped his path to becoming the best-graduating student of the Faculty of Arts in 2024.

Oluwagbemiga graduated with a CGPA of 3.83 on a 4.0 scale in Linguistics. Throughout his journey, he discovered that a strong mindset, commitment, and support system were the cornerstones of success. This philosophy enabled him to tackle challenges with resilience, turning obstacles into opportunities for growth.

In his 100-level year, Oluwagbemiga encountered one of his earliest academic challenges. After scoring 24/40 in a continuous assessment for an essay-writing course, he felt discouraged but resolved to improve. Through determination and effort, he scored 76/100 by the end of the course, a result that reinforced his belief in the power of perseverance.

Later, during his 300-level year, financial difficulties emerged when his father fell ill, requiring him to take on additional responsibilities. Despite the pressure, Oluwagbemiga adapted and demonstrated resilience, a trait that became a defining aspect of his academic journey.

If not for his decision to study Linguistics, Oluwagbemiga revealed he might have pursued German, English, Psychology, Philosophy, or Ancient History.

When he learned he was the best-graduating student in his faculty, Oluwagbemiga felt a mix of excitement and gratitude. However, he also recognized that the achievement came with heightened expectations and responsibilities. This sense of responsibility was familiar, as others often saw potential in him that exceeded his own perceptions. Their confidence motivated him to push beyond his limits.

Understanding the importance of well-being, Oluwagbemiga prioritized healthy eating and adequate sleep. Early in his academic journey, he realized that overnight reading sessions were not effective for him, so he focused on maintaining a balanced routine. This approach kept him energized and focused throughout his studies.

Oluwagbemiga maintained a relationship throughout his time at the university, starting from his 100-level year.

Instead of adhering to a rigid schedule, Oluwagbemiga relied on self-awareness to manage his time. He emphasized understanding one’s strengths and limitations, which enabled him to allocate time effectively and achieve academic success.

Regarding exam preparation, he recommended staying calm, reading questions thoroughly, and trusting in one’s preparation. Oluwagbemiga also highlighted the importance of finding a study method that works best for the individual.

Oluwagbemiga’s journey was far from straightforward. It was characterized by consistent effort, setbacks, and growth. Along the way, he was supported by friends such as Mayowa, Sola, Deola, Olabamipe, and Ayanfe, as well as by mentors who guided him. His philosophy of always giving his best was instrumental in his success.

Viewing stress as a natural part of life, Oluwagbemiga focused on managing it through healthy habits, such as eating well, resting adequately, and maintaining a positive mindset. He approached challenges as opportunities for growth, which helped him stay composed and purposeful.

Looking back, Oluwagbemiga expressed no regrets about his time at UI. He embraced every experience—both academic and non-academic—and made lasting memories with friends.

For students struggling academically, Oluwagbemiga advised understanding the university system, seeking guidance, and identifying personal strengths and learning styles. He encouraged students to avoid following the crowd and to focus on what works best for them.

Oluwagbemiga’s contributions extended beyond academics. He mentored close to 500 students across universities and held leadership roles, including serving as the Student Head Librarian and Academic Committee Chair in his department. He also volunteered at the departmental, faculty, and student union levels, leaving a lasting impact on the UI community.

Oluwagbemiga emphasized that education is about more than academics—it is also about personal growth, service, and building meaningful relationships. His journey reflects a commitment to excellence, resilience, and the empowerment of others, leaving an indelible mark on the University of Ibadan.
