Aminata Jaiteh, a Gambian scholar, earned a master’s degree in Gender and Development Studies at the University of Sussex through the Chevening Scholarship, overcoming challenges and emerging as a strong advocate for gender equality and social progress.

Aminata Jaiteh, a remarkable scholar from The Gambia, has successfully earned a master’s degree in Gender and Development Studies from the University of Sussex, UK. Her academic journey was made possible by the prestigious Chevening Scholarship, a fully funded program supported by the UK government and the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office. In 2023, she relocated to the UK to pursue her studies, and a year later, she fulfilled her long-held dream by graduating from the university’s Institute of Development Studies.
Reflecting on her experience, Aminata described studying in the UK as one of the most challenging yet rewarding phases of her life. She faced difficulties such as adapting to a new environment, extreme weather conditions, and even losing two major assignments just before submission due to a laptop crash. Despite these setbacks, she remained resilient, relying on determination, faith, and hope to push through.
For Aminata, her achievement is not just about earning a degree but also about proving the power of perseverance and the strength of women. She fondly remembers engaging in thought-provoking feminist discussions, attending early morning lectures, anxiously awaiting grades, and celebrating milestones—all while exploring the rich cultural landscape of the UK.
As a proud Chevening alumna, she now stands as a Gender and Development Specialist from the world’s top-ranked institution for Development Studies. She attributes her success to the unwavering support of her family, mentors, lecturers, supervisors, and friends, as well as the generosity of the Chevening Awards, which made her academic journey possible.
Looking ahead, Aminata is eager to apply the knowledge and experiences she gained to drive meaningful change in the field of gender and development. With newfound confidence and expertise, she is prepared to make a lasting impact on global gender equality and social progress.
