Sixteen AFUED graduates died and two were critically injured in a tragic bus crash while traveling to the Gombe NYSC camp, sparking nationwide mourning and renewed calls for improved road safety and safer NYSC mobilization.

A tragic road accident has claimed the lives of sixteen prospective NYSC corps members from Adeyemi Federal University of Education (AFUED), Ondo, as they travelled to the National Youth Service Corps orientation camp in Gombe State. Two others from the same institution survived but are reported to be in critical condition.
The victims were riding in an 18-seater bus headed to the camp when the crash abruptly ended the hopes and dreams of the young graduates preparing to begin their national service. Emergency responders arrived at the scene to evacuate the bodies and rush the injured to a nearby hospital for urgent treatment.
Authorities have not yet released details on the cause of the crash, though investigations are currently ongoing. The incident has thrown AFUED into deep mourning, with students, staff, and families devastated by the sudden loss of so many promising lives.
The tragedy has also reignited public calls for the federal government to overhaul road safety measures and reassess NYSC mobilization procedures, especially the long-distance travel often required of prospective corps members.
One X user, DukeofBourdillion, expressed grief and frustration, describing the incident as a “black Wednesday” and urging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene. He also called for a temporary suspension of NYSC mobilization pending stronger safety measures, lamenting the “relentless loss of innocent lives on our roads.”
The nation continues to mourn the young graduates whose journey to serve their country ended in heartbreaking tragedy.
