Ogun Teacher Trainee Attempts Suicide After Pupil Loses Eye in Classroom Accident

A student-teacher in Ogun State, Adeola Adeyemo, was arrested after an accidental classroom incident caused an 11-year-old pupil to lose her eye, leading the teacher to attempt suicide before being hospitalized.

The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a student-teacher, Adeola Adeyemo, for allegedly causing an 11-year-old pupil, Alao Idera, to lose her right eye in a classroom accident at Owiwi Nursery and Primary School, Obada Oko.

Adeyemo, a 400-level student of Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijebu Ode, was undergoing her teaching practice when the incident occurred. According to police spokesperson Omolola Odutola, Adeyemo was holding a cane while preparing for an end-of-year party when the pupil rushed toward her, and the cane accidentally pierced her eye.

The injured pupil was immediately taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, where her damaged eye was surgically removed. Odutola clarified that the teacher did not flog the pupil or act maliciously, describing the event as an unfortunate accident.

Following the surgery, Adeyemo reportedly attempted suicide upon learning about the removal of the pupil’s eye. However, police intervened and rushed her to the hospital, where she is now stable.

This incident comes after a similar tragedy in the state where Monday Arijo, a Senior Secondary School 2 student, died in October after being flogged 24 times and made to perform 162 frog jumps by a teacher at Obada Grammar School. The school was subsequently shut down by the state government.

The police have reiterated the need for strict safety protocols in schools to prevent such tragic occurrences.
