FULokoja Achieves 24-Hour Power Supply via REA/AfDB Landmark Solar Project.

A remarkable development has unfolded at the Federal University Lokoja (FUL), Kogi State, as the vibrant academic community now joins the league of universities in Nigeria to enjoy uninterrupted power supply through a large-scale solar plant that guarantees 24-hour renewable energy that will strategically position the University for academic excellence and global competition.
As the year 2026 begins and academic activities resume fully, Federal University Lokoja can now heave a sigh of relief as the 1.72MWp-4MWh Hybrid Solar Farm implemented by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) under its Energizing Education Programme (EEP) has been energized, boosting electricity supply and providing sustainable, reliable, and constant power to the University.
This notable achievement was disclosed by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olayemi Akinwumi, after he paid a working visit to the project site, where he inspected the facilities and confirmed that the mega power project had successfully undergone energization phase and has been supplying power to the main campus at Felele for the past few weeks, marking a significant milestone in renewable energy generation for the fifteen-year-old University.
Professor Akinwumi, who was conducted around the facilities along with the Chief Security Officer and some members of staff of the Physical Planning and Development Directorate (PP&DD) by the team of engineers he met on the ground, expressed joy that the project, which commenced under his administration has come to a successful completion despite the initial challenges, heralding a new chapter in the growth and development of FUL as one of Nigeria’s fastest growing Universities.
While commending the contractors for a job well done and the timely completion of the project, the Vice-Chancellor thanked the Federal Government, particularly the Rural Electrification Agency under the Federal Ministry of Power, and the African Development Bank (AfDB), who funded the mini grid energy project, for choosing Federal University Lokoja among the eight (8) public universities in Nigeria that benefited from the huge intervention, worth over $200 million, aimed to provide clean, reliable, and off-grid power in academic environments.
The REA/AfDB Electrification Intervention, which was announced in June 2020 and the actual construction work began in early 2024, also includes the provision of solar-powered streetlights, a world-class renewable energy training center, and the upgrade of the distribution network across the University, among other cutting-edge facilities and services that the project offers
