Dorothy Mawuena Buatsi, a Ghanaian scholar, secured the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship in 2021, enabling her to pursue a fully funded master’s degree in Europe, and now shares her experience to inspire others to prepare early, stay confident, and apply for international scholarships.

Dorothy Mawuena Buatsi, a Ghanaian scholar, was awarded the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship in 2021, allowing her to pursue a fully funded master’s degree in Europe. The scholarship covered tuition, living expenses, travel costs, and health insurance, making it a life-changing opportunity for her. Excited by her achievement, she started a YouTube channel to share insights about studying abroad and provide guidance on scholarship applications.
Her academic journey began with a first-class degree in archaeology and political science from the University of Ghana, Legon. Passionate about archaeology, she actively engaged in volunteering and later completed her national service at the Department of Archaeology and Heritage Studies. While working as an assistant curator and research assistant, she learned about the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship from a master’s student, which led her to apply for the program with the support of her lecturers and friends.
Buatsi emphasized the importance of early preparation when applying for scholarships. She advised gathering all necessary documents, such as academic transcripts, English proficiency proof, and recommendation letters, well in advance. She also stressed the need for a well-crafted motivation letter that effectively conveys one’s passion and qualifications. Seeking feedback from mentors and learning from past recipients through online resources can also improve the quality of an application.
Reflecting on her experience, she acknowledged that self-doubt initially made her hesitant to apply. She also regretted applying too close to the deadline, which added unnecessary pressure. From this, she encouraged future applicants to start early, remain confident, and not let fear prevent them from pursuing opportunities. A positive mindset, she realized, plays a crucial role in achieving success.
Buatsi’s final advice to aspiring scholars is to engage in extracurricular activities, internships, and volunteer work to enhance their resumes. She urged applicants to apply to multiple opportunities and to craft motivation letters that leave a strong impression. Concluding her story, she expressed hope that her experience would inspire others to take bold steps toward securing scholarships and advancing their academic careers.
