Ghanian School To Begin Online Class As Strike Begins

CURSORY: The management of University of Ghana to go on strike due to government’s inability to pay staff, and the school commences online classes.

Following the strike by some staff members over condition of service, the management of the university of Ghana decided to shift lectures for freshers online. The library hours at Balme Library which was 14 hours was also reduced to 9 hours.

The strike was organized by the Senior Staff Association of Universities in Ghana and the Teachers’ and Educational Workers Union (TEWU).

Some students of the institution have also shown their concerns regarding the strike which was affecting their studies.

TEWU also stated that they may prevent students from writing their exam by shutting down Lectures halls.

The university of cape coast also shut down it’s hospital indefinitely, starting from January 19th due to the strike.

Since January 17th 2024, the Senior Staff Association of Universities in Ghana has been on strike.

It was said that the government has been owing the staff of the university, and the senior association has asked the government to pay all the outstanding debts and contributions, as well as the interests from February to December 2023 with urgency.

They also said that the three percent (3%) penalty rate stipulated by the Pension Act, Act 766 section 64 because of the delays should be added by the government. It also wants the policy cancelling overtime allowances reversed by the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission.

The Senior Staff also stated that between 2010 and 2016, the tier-2 contribution was not paid, and when settling the arrears, only a simple interest without the penalty was paid.

TEWU has given the government an ultimatum to reverse value added tax (VAT) on purchase of electricity. Also, administrative processes like admission and payment of fees are to be affected by the strike.
