Homeless 23-Year-Old Wins Scholarship to U.S. University, Graduates with Political Science Degree

Despite facing homelessness and extreme hardships, 23-year-old Kenneth Clancey earned a Political Science degree from Loyola Marymount University on scholarship, aiming to change stereotypes about homelessness.

Kenneth Clancey, a 23-year-old who once faced homelessness, achieved a bachelor’s degree in Political Science after winning a scholarship to Loyola Marymount University in the U.S., overcoming enormous personal challenges.

Kenneth’s journey was far from easy. At just 11, he found himself on the streets, and by 14, he was aging out of foster care. Often lacking a place to stay, he would sometimes sleep on Los Angeles city buses.

“That was my lowest point—having nowhere to go and sleeping on the bus,” he reflected.

At 15, he and his family stayed in a small 200-square-foot room at the Union Rescue Mission on Skid Row. His daily commute to high school exposed him to drugs and street violence.

Despite these harsh conditions, Kenneth maintained a 4.0 GPA and was active in track, football, and swimming. His dedication earned him several scholarships, ultimately allowing him to attend Loyola Marymount University.

Reflecting on his achievement, Kenneth said, “Finishing this journey was surreal. I climbed here bare-handed. Yes, it was harder without the support others have, but it’s not impossible.”

Following graduation, Kenneth received job offers in government, nonprofits, and public relations. But first, he plans to work at the Inner-City Arts summer camp.

Kenneth hopes his success story will help shift perceptions about homeless individuals. “The goal is to challenge stereotypes about Skid Row,” he said.
