Homeless Man Earns Two Bachelors, Masters, and PhD in Geophysics

Cursory: Musa Mnzi, a South African, overcame adversity to achieve academic excellence in Geophysics at the University of Witwatersrand. Despite facing homelessness and personal tragedy, he excelled in his studies and became the first black South African to earn a PhD in Geophysics. Now, as an Associate Professor and Director of the Seismic Research Centre, he is committed to empowering disadvantaged communities through the Dr. Musa Manzi Foundation.

Musa Mnzi, a resilient individual, overcame considerable obstacles, including homelessness, to attain remarkable academic accomplishments. He earned two bachelor’s degrees, a master’s, and a doctorate in Geophysics from the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa. Raised by a single mother who worked as a house helper after his father’s passing when he was just two years old, Musa demonstrated unwavering academic excellence. Despite the hurdles he faced, he completed high school and gained admission to the University of Witwatersrand with a perfect score in Mathematics at the age of 16.

Musa mentioned that securing a place to stay led to a disciplinary notice from the university. However, his fortunes changed when classmates, upon learning of his situation, graciously invited him for a meal. Subsequently, their parents, Ed and Rose Thomas, extended their kindness by offering Musa and his nieces a place to live. Musa expressed profound gratitude for their generosity, describing them as his adoptive parents. With the unwavering support of the Thomas family, Musa earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Maths, Physics, and Computer Science, as well as another Bachelor of Science degree in Geophysics.

After obtaining his Master of Science (MSc) in Geophysics from the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), Musa pursued his PhD in Geophysics from the same institution. Upon completing his doctoral studies, he not only graduated as a Geophysics doctor but also made history as the first black South African to achieve this distinction. Two years later, he was appointed as an Associate Professor at the Wits School of GeoSciences and assumed the role of Director at the Seismic Research Centre.

Musa has been honored with numerous awards both locally and internationally, including the Africa Award for Research Excellence in Earth and Ocean Science from the American Geophysical Union and the Emerging Researcher Award at South Africa’s renowned ‘Science Oscars’ ceremony, known as the NSTF-TW Kambule Award.

Moreover, Musa established the Dr. Musa Manzi Foundation, an organization dedicated to discovering and nurturing young talent in underserved areas. Through education, inspiration, and empowerment, the foundation seeks to bring about immediate and sustainable change in the lives of disadvantaged individuals.
