Adeogun Joshua, a 23-year-old first-class graduate from the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), recently shared his experiences and challenges during his academic journey, which extended from five years to seven due to unforeseen circumstances.
Joshua, hailing from Ile Alagbede in Atiba Local Government Area of Oyo town, Oyo State, was admitted to FUTA in 2016 to study civil and environmental engineering. He graduated in November 2023, a journey marked by perseverance and dedication.
Reflecting on his achievement, Joshua described the overwhelming sense of responsibility that accompanied his first-class honors. “Graduating with a first-class was a huge success for me. I am forever grateful to God Almighty for making it possible,” he said.
Joshua’s academic motivation began with a surprising 4.62 GPA in his first semester, which set a high standard for the rest of his studies. However, adjusting to the freedom and self-responsibility of university life was challenging. His first computer-based mathematics exam was particularly daunting, resulting in an incomplete attempt due to poor time management.
Inspired by his uncle, a successful civil engineer, Joshua chose to study civil and environmental engineering. He appreciated the broad scope of the course, which allowed him to explore various sections like Highway and Transportation, Structural, Hydrology, and Environmental Engineering.
Joshua’s academic journey was extended by two years due to frequent strikes. Despite these disruptions, he maintained a strong academic record, graduating with a 4.53 CGPA. “It was great to finish with that grade despite the strikes and without any carryover,” he remarked.
His success was supported by diligent study habits and a close-knit group of friends who shared his academic dedication. Group studies played a crucial role in maintaining motivation and achieving high performance.
Joshua credited his parents for instilling the importance of education from an early age. Despite initial aspirations to become a pilot or astronaut, his admiration for his uncle’s work in civil engineering guided his career choice.
Although Joshua had limited time for sports, he remained active in church activities. He emphasized the importance of a supportive social circle and balanced time management for academic success.
Joshua advised students to prioritize their tasks, avoid procrastination, and maintain a close relationship with God. “Never leave for tomorrow what you can do today,” he recommended.
Reflecting on his journey, Joshua shared the emotional reactions of his parents upon learning of his first-class honors. He expressed gratitude for their support and sacrifices, which were instrumental in his academic achievements.
As Joshua looks to the future, his story serves as an inspiring testament to resilience and the power of determination in overcoming academic challenges.
