Jacinta Mutwiwa, a Kenyan mathematician and lecturer, has made history as one of the youngest women to earn a PhD in applied mathematics before the age of 30. Her academic journey is a testament to resilience and discipline, with a remarkable score of 299 marks in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE).

Growing up in Makueni County, Jacinta began her primary education at Uvunye Primary School and later joined Kiu Secondary School, where she scored a B plain in her Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education exams. She went on to pursue Education in Mathematics and Business Studies at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST), graduating with a First-Class Honours degree in 2015.

Jacinta’s academic excellence earned her a fully funded PhD at Kibabii University, where she is currently a Lecturer in the Department of Mathematics. She has also won the Centre for Epidemiological Modelling and Analysis for Africa (CEMA) fellowship, which has supported her research in mathematical modeling and epidemiology.

As a dedicated educator, Jacinta serves as the Coordinator of Linkages and International Affairs at Kibabii University and is a board member of several schools. Her recent presentation, “A Mathematical Model for the Dynamics of Stress and Depression among Kenyan University Students,” won her the best overall presenter award at the 3rd Busitema University Science, Technology and Innovation Symposium (BUSTIC 2025).
