JAMB Declares Only Resit Scores Valid for Affected UTME Candidates

JAMB has ruled that only the resit scores from the recent UTME will be valid for affected candidates, nullifying their initial results due to widespread technical and human errors during the original exam.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has officially announced that only the results from the recent Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) resit will be recognized for candidates who were asked to retake the exam. This decision effectively nullifies the initial scores of those affected by the widespread technical and human errors that marred the original examination process.

According to JAMB’s spokesperson, Fabian Benjamin, the board cannot allow candidates to possess multiple results, as doing so would compromise the integrity and fairness of the admission process. “You can’t have two results. One must be withdrawn – that means the old result has been withdrawn,” he emphasized.

The resit was necessitated after numerous complaints surfaced from both candidates and their parents, particularly from centres in Lagos and parts of the Southeast, where over 379,000 students were impacted. Many of these candidates claimed they had better scores in the original exam and questioned whether the initial results could be considered.

However, JAMB has stood firm on its decision, stressing that the resit results offer a more accurate and fair assessment after addressing the earlier technical flaws. The board has since released the updated scores, which showed significant improvement in performance, with a higher number of students scoring above the 200 mark.

This development highlights JAMB’s commitment to maintaining examination standards and ensuring that all candidates are assessed under uniform and credible conditions.
