The University of Abuja chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has called off its 82-day strike after the new Governing Council committed to addressing their demands, including the review of staff appointments, promotions, and the advertisement for the Vice-Chancellor position.

The University of Abuja (UniAbuja) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced the immediate suspension of its 82-day strike.
Dr. Sylvanus Ugoh, the union’s chairperson, made the announcement while briefing journalists in Abuja on Monday following the union’s congress.
The strike was suspended after engagement with the new Governing Council of the University, which committed to reviewing and addressing the union’s demands.
The union had initiated an indefinite strike on May 2, 2024, in response to issues such as the violation of extant laws regarding staff appointments and promotions in the absence of a Governing Council, and the illegal advertisement for the Vice-Chancellor position by the administration led by Professor Abdulrasheed Na’Allah.
Dr. Ugoh stated that the council had agreed to cancel the previous advertisement for the Vice-Chancellor position and re-advertise it in accordance with due process. They also agreed to review the employment processes and the 2022/2023 promotion exercise that the union had contested.
“Within these 82 days, we engaged with the former vice-chancellor who did not comply with the rules or the Act establishing the university. After all procedures failed, the Union embarked on a comprehensive and indefinite strike,” Ugoh explained.
Following the inauguration of the new council, the union resumed engagement and received a written commitment addressing their issues, including the cancellation and re-advertisement of the Vice-Chancellor position, review of recruitment processes, and revision of the promotion exercise.
Additionally, elections for the positions of Deans of Faculties and the Provost of the College of Health Sciences will be conducted, and the union will participate in the board of directors for the microfinance bank.
“In honor of the new council and the acting vice-chancellor, the union has reviewed these commitments and resolved unanimously to suspend the strike,” Ugoh concluded.
