British politician Kemi Badenoch recounted how, as a teenager in Nigeria, she reported a classmate for cheating during an exam—an act that led to his expulsion and her social backlash, but one she still believes was the right thing to do.

British politician Kemi Badenoch has opened up about a striking moment from her school days in Nigeria, where her actions led to a fellow student being expelled for cheating during an exam.
In a recent interview, Badenoch reflected on her younger years, admitting she had a reputation for being a tattletale because she disliked dishonesty, especially in academics.
“I was the kind of person who’d raise my hand and say, ‘That person is copying notes,’” she said. “Even then, I hated cheating. I wanted to be top of the class, and I was putting in the work. It felt unfair that others were taking shortcuts.”
She recounted a particularly intense moment when, at around 14 or 15 years old, she stood up during an exam to report a classmate who was cheating.
“I remember standing up in the middle of the hall and saying, ‘He’s cheating.’ That boy ended up getting expelled. But I didn’t get praise for it—just backlash. Even though I was quite popular at school, people asked why I would do such a thing.”
The incident, she revealed, shaped how others saw her—and how she saw herself.
“People told me I didn’t belong there, that I didn’t know how to behave. I’ve heard that my whole life—‘You don’t follow the rules. You’re too direct. You speak the truth when you shouldn’t.’”
Despite the criticism she faced, Badenoch remains unapologetic.
“One person told me, ‘You were the only one with the guts to do it. It was the right thing to do.’”
