A Nigerian lady has shared how a rude encounter while buying bread during her National Youth Service Corps year in Kogi State became deeply hurtful when her ex-boyfriend, who had promised to protect her, laughed instead of defending her, leaving a lasting emotional impact.

A Nigerian lady has taken to social media to share a deeply memorable and emotional experience she had with her ex-boyfriend during her time serving under the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). The woman, identified as @itohan-olat on X (formerly Twitter), explained that the incident happened while she was posted to Kogi State for her national service.
According to her account, the experience occurred during a simple outing to buy bread from a local Igbira woman. While trying to make her purchase, she politely asked the woman a question about the bread, only to receive a rude and sarcastic response. The bread seller reportedly replied in a mocking tone, saying something along the lines of “no, it’s last year’s bread,” which immediately caused people around to laugh and giggle at her embarrassment. Although the comment stung slightly, she said she tried to brush it off and not let it affect her too much.
However, the situation became far more painful when she turned around and realized that her ex-boyfriend—who was with her at the time—was also laughing loudly at her instead of offering comfort or stepping in to defend her. She stated that his reaction shocked her deeply, as she had always believed he would stand up for her in moments like that. Rather than support her, he found the situation extremely amusing.
The lady revealed that her ex-boyfriend continued laughing throughout their journey home and made no attempt to apologize or acknowledge how hurt she felt. When confronted, he reportedly dismissed her feelings, insisting that the incident was simply funny and not something she should take seriously. This reaction, she said, hurt her far more than the rude comment from the bread seller.
She went on to explain that what truly broke her was the realization that the same man who had previously promised to protect her at all costs could not even defend her in such a small but humiliating situation. The incident opened her eyes to his lack of emotional support and empathy, making her question the foundation of their relationship.
While she admitted that she eventually healed from the experience, she emphasized that the memory has stayed with her over the years. According to her, the day taught her an important lesson about paying attention to actions rather than promises, especially in relationships. She concluded by saying that although time has passed and wounds have healed, she never forgot how alone she felt in that moment.
