Sowemimo Efunjola, a 500-level student at Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM), has won the 2024 World Environment Day essay competition held in Alausa, Lagos State.
The competition, organized by the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) in collaboration with Dangote Industries and Nigerian Breweries, centered around the theme, “Innovative Approaches to Land Restoration, Combating Desertification, and Enhancing Drought Resilience in the Lagos Environment.”
Dr. Tunde Ajayi, General Manager of LASEPA, emphasized that the initiative aims to involve undergraduates from various tertiary institutions in Lagos State in the crucial task of environmental preservation. He noted that this competition provides a platform to foster the agency’s advocacy campaigns in schools and colleges, encouraging youth participation in implementing government policies to combat climate change and promote sustainable environmental growth.
Sowemimo Efunjola expressed immense joy and excitement upon winning the essay competition, describing the achievement as surreal. “I give glory to God for His favor and grace. I am deeply honored and humbled to be the winner of the essay competition. Honestly, I did not see this win coming. Nonetheless, I put a lot of effort into writing my entry essay. I am so grateful to Lagos State and the sponsors of the essay competition for the great opportunity. Also, I am profoundly grateful to my school, Lagos State University College of Medicine, for nurturing me,” she said.
Reflecting on the challenges she faced, Efunjola admitted, “Quite frankly, I was really reluctant to write the essay because I have participated in a few competitions like this before without winning. This demoralized me. Nonetheless, one thing stood out for me. And that was the theme. I really loved the theme and how the competition was for the environment. I am so glad I ended up applying.”
Efunjola conveyed her heartfelt gratitude to LASEPA for involving Lagos youths in environmental matters. “I must commend LASEPA for doing a wonderful job by involving Lagos youths in matters of the environment within the state. I hope the solutions provided by my fellow participants and I can be implemented to get a healthier Lagos,” she stated.
