Man Becomes One of the Youngest PhD Holders in Mathematics at 32

Cursory: Sisa Pazi, 32, achieved a significant milestone by earning a Ph.D. in Mathematics from Nelson Mandela University, despite facing difficulties since childhood. He credits community support and his grandmother’s resilience for his success.

Sisa Pazi, aged 32, has achieved a remarkable milestone by becoming one of the youngest individuals to hold a Ph.D. in Mathematics from Nelson Mandela University.

Despite facing numerous challenges since the age of seven, Sisa persevered and earned his doctoral degree in Mathematical Statistics from the university in South Africa.

Following the loss of his mother at the age of seven, Sisa was raised by his grandmother, who was responsible for caring for him and his five siblings without a stable source of income, as reported by Women Power Africa. Despite these hardships, Sisa remained determined to succeed academically.

Reflecting on his journey, Sisa emphasized the importance of community support, stating, “It is said that it takes a village to raise a child. I understand this quote very well as my grandmother primarily relied on alms to put food on the table.”

He expressed gratitude that despite the challenges, he never went to bed hungry.

”It gives me great pleasure, however, to say that despite the difficulties, not a single day have I ever gone to bed hungry,” he said.

Sisa earned his bachelor’s degree in Applied Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics with honors from Nelson Mandela University.

Due to financial constraints, he had to work part-time while pursuing his undergraduate studies. Additionally, he completed his master’s degree in Mathematical Statistics while holding a permanent position as a Statistics Lecturer at the same university.

After obtaining his master’s degree, Sisa continued to work full-time to support his family while pursuing his doctorate part-time.

In 2018, he enrolled in the doctoral program, and now, he has successfully graduated with a Ph.D. in Mathematical Statistics from Nelson Mandela University.
