A motorbike rider and a schoolgirl were swept away by floodwaters in Ekpoma, Edo State, after heavy rains, but were rescued by local youths, sparking renewed calls for improved drainage infrastructure.

A commercial motorcyclist and a female student were swept away by floodwaters in Ekpoma, Edo State, following heavy rainfall that lasted through Sunday night into early Tuesday.
The incident occurred along Uwenlenbo Road, near Zekor Hotel, where the motorcycle was caught in a fast-moving flood. According to viral video footage, the rider and his passenger struggled against the current. The schoolgirl managed to jump off the bike before it was swept away, while the rider was carried off by the water.
Local youths quickly responded and were able to rescue both the man and the student. The motorcycle’s license plate—Delta AGB 130 WL—was visible in the videos, with appeals made for anyone who recognizes the owner to come forward.
The event has reignited public concern over the lack of proper drainage and erosion control in the area. Residents are calling on government authorities to take immediate action to prevent future tragedies.
