The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) secured the release of a LASU student who was unlawfully arrested following a false petition by her landlord, praising AIG Adegoke Fayoade for his swift and just intervention while urging an investigation into the landlord’s actions.
The Lagos State chapter of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has praised the swift intervention of AIG Adegoke M. Fayoade of Zone 2 Command, Lagos, following the unlawful arrest of a female student of Lagos State University (LASU).
In a statement issued on July 22 and signed by NANS JCC Lagos Chairman, Comrade Abdul-Raheem Abdul-Quadri, and PRO, Comrade Ridwan Ajayi, the student was arrested on July 18 by police officers from Zone 2, allegedly based on a “malicious and misleading” petition filed by her landlord.
NANS reported that the student had previously lodged a harassment complaint against her landlord at the Igando Police Division. Rather than respond to police summons, the landlord allegedly retaliated by filing a false report to have the student detained.
The incident quickly drew public attention on social media, prompting NANS and the LASU Students’ Union (LASUSU) to take immediate action. They reached out directly to AIG Fayoade, urging him to investigate and secure the student’s release.
“Our chairman acted swiftly upon receiving reliable intelligence. Thanks to our intervention and the prompt response of AIG Fayoade, the student was granted bail by 6:00 a.m. the next day,” the statement read.
AIG Fayoade went a step further by convening a fact-finding meeting on July 21. Present at the session were the student, her parents, the landlord, LASUSU representatives, senior police officials, and NANS leaders. After reviewing the matter, the case was transferred to the Lagos State Commissioner of Police to ensure impartial investigation.
NANS praised AIG Fayoade for his “empathy, professionalism, and courage,” stating that his actions helped restore public faith in the Nigerian Police. They also acknowledged LASUSU’s vital role in protecting student rights and elevating the issue.
“This incident proves that when institutions act responsibly, justice can prevail,” NANS emphasized.
The student body also warned against the misuse of police powers and urged authorities to investigate the landlord’s intent, which they believe could amount to criminal misrepresentation.
“We will resist any attempt to intimidate or silence students through police manipulation,” the statement concluded. “Justice must be served, and we are committed to seeing this case through.”
