Cursory: Elmo Desilva, a 45-year-old man whose education was cut short in his early days due to several challenges, has finally earned his high school diploma from a school he worked as a cleaner for years.

Elmo Desilva, a 45-year-old African American resident of Clarkston, Georgia, has achieved a significant milestone by earning his high school diploma after working as a school custodian for years.
Desilva shared his journey, stating that it was not an easy path but looking back, he feels a great sense of pride in his accomplishment. “It wasn’t easy. It was a struggle for a while. But looking back, I am very proud,”
As a custodian at a local elementary school, Desilva had aspirations of becoming the head custodian. However, this position required him to have a high school diploma.
Recognizing Desilva’s potential, the school principal, Stephanie Brown-Bryant, guided him to enroll in the DeKalb County Adult Education Program.
“By having our staff members equipped with educational opportunities it lends itself to growth. Not just for them but for our school,” Brown-Bryant said.
After attending night classes twice a week for approximately six months, Desilva successfully obtained his high school diploma. He was among 46 adults who were honored at a graduation ceremony organized by the school district.
“I hate to fail at something. I didn’t want to start and not finish. I didn’t want to disappoint my boss,” he said.
During his teenage years, Desilva faced an unstable living situation with absentee parents, which prevented him from graduating high school. He took on the responsibility of caring for his younger siblings, which further delayed his own education.
“I had to make money to put food on the table and clothes on their backs as a young teenager. It just pulled me out of school,” he said.
With his high school diploma in hand, Desilva now has the opportunity to be promoted to head custodian. This advancement would enable him to better provide for his family, plan for retirement, and potentially explore further professional growth opportunities.
