Nigerian dad shares copy of letter he wrote to school before withdrawing his son from the school over bullying

Mike Ekunno a Nigerian dad has gone online to share a letter he wrote to the Federal Government College, Abuja, because his son was repeated bullied.

He had taken out time to share his experiences as a parent in 2018 following the death Sylvester Oromoni a student of Dowen College as a result of attacks by schoolmates.

A letter which he wrote to the school principal in 2018 was written to inform the bullying of the bullying acts his son was subjected to by some SS2 students since getting admission into the school.

He later withdrew his son from the school after nothing reasonable was done by the school.

He wrote: ”Copy of my letter to the school authority over the bullying of my son. I finally had to withdraw him without sitting for his promotional exam to keep him alive.”

The letter which is dated 4th June 2018 and addressed to the principal of the school reads as follows:

OFFICIAL COMPLAINT ABOUT THE SERIAL BULLYING AND TRAUMATISATION OF MY SON, IFESINACHI EKUNNO

I wish to start by welcoming you to the school after your recent posting. I can confirm from my son that there have been marked improvements in the students’ welfare since your arrival. While I urge you to keep it up, let me also draw you’re your attention to the matter of bullying, stealing and extortion against junior students which may not be attracting as mus attention as needed.

I am making this complaint as a last resort to follow due process after which I’d be left with no choice than to deal with the matter the best way I see fit. Again, this did not start during your tenure so don’t’ see it as a personal indictment.

My son, ifesinachi, 10, is an intelligent, bold and a free-sprited boy. His mother and I are shocked at the transformation of his personality since enrolling in your school at the start of this academic session. He has suddenly turned timorous, scared and fidgety apart from losing about 10kg from his entry level weight of 50kg. we have consistently interrogated him to find out what the challenges could be. We have tried our best to cushion the effects of his harsh environment through diplomacy with identified bullies, replacement of his losses and a generous supply of provisions. Sadly, these efforts have yielded litle success because when you thought you had pacified oneset of his tormentors, another set rises.
The current spike in his ordeal is traceable to the rise of the SS2 students as the former SS3 overlords are set to leave. To cut a long story short, the following four students whose surnames were not given have been identified as his tormentors in chief. Their instruments and methods include forceful confiscation and consumption of his meals, denial of his hight sleep with prolonged unwarranted punishments, flogging with leather belts, unwarranted slaps and verbal abuses and extortion of his provisions.

As a seasoned educationist, ma, you verry well know the effects of starvation and lack of up to 9 hours of sleep of the growth and development of children. The identified culprits all Ofoduduwa house are:
David …………………………….SS2
Paul ……………………………….SS2
Charles ……………………………SS2
Ebuka ……………………………..SS3

Ma, I have tried to be as civil as possible with this written complaint and to mask the rage and thirst for vengeance we feel about his tormentors. If these boys are not cautioned in a way to draw the attention of their parents, I will take steps to protect myson myself and to severely degrade their capacity to ever bully and traumatise him or any hapless boy in the future.
Respectfully submitted, Ma.
Sincerely
(Signature)
Mike Ekumo

Many persons have reacted to this post by with some of them supporting his action.

One of those in support of his action writes as follows:

“Parents, the best way to handle bullying complaint is withdraw the child from such school. It happened to me as well. I bet you, going to report the culprits to the school authority will only worsen the situation, except the school can put their foot down. This parent did the best thing for his child. Great job!”.
