Abdullahi Aborode, a determined Nigerian graduate, has achieved the remarkable feat of securing two fully funded PhD scholarships in the US without a master’s degree, driven by his passion for research in chemistry and medicine.

Abdullahi Aborode, a resolute young man from Nigeria, has made headlines by earning two fully funded PhD scholarships at a prestigious US university, all without holding a master’s degree. Graduating from the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) with a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and a second-class lower classification, Abdullahi faced significant challenges but never wavered in his pursuit of international academic excellence. His determination and enthusiasm for research propelled him forward in the face of adversity.
For four long years, Abdullahi tirelessly applied to various graduate programs, navigating a landscape rife with intense competition and numerous rejections. Despite setbacks, he remained focused on self-improvement, dedicating himself to honing his skills in laboratory techniques, research writing, and leadership. Additionally, he took the initiative to gain certifications in the GRE, Duolingo, and TOEFL, further fortifying his applications and broadening his academic prospects.
Throughout this journey, Abdullahi actively engaged in conferences to enhance his knowledge and network within the scientific community. His persistent efforts paid off in 2022 when he received the life-changing news of being awarded two fully funded PhD offers. Reflecting on his experiences, he described the journey as one of resilience, hard work, and unwavering faith, highlighting the significance of perseverance in achieving his dreams.
Now ready to begin his PhD program at the Department of Chemistry at Mississippi State University, Abdullahi’s research aims to explore the interface of science and medicine. He plans to investigate the intracellular calcium-sensing protein “Calmodulin” and its role in detecting changes in calcium concentration, a critical component in developing therapies for heart disease. Grateful for the support of his family, friends, mentors, and recommenders, Abdullahi is excited for this new chapter in his academic career.
