A Nigerian man’s call to rename the University of Lagos after the late President Muhammadu Buhari has sparked widespread debate online, with mixed reactions and alternative suggestions from the public.

A Nigerian citizen has sparked online debate after suggesting that the University of Lagos (UNILAG) be renamed in memory of the late President Muhammadu Buhari.
This proposal surfaced shortly after the former president’s death in a London hospital. Following the return of Buhari’s remains to Nigeria via military aircraft, a social media user identified as @TheoAbuAgada took to X (formerly Twitter) to advocate for the name change.
“UNILAG should be named after Buhari,” he posted, adding, “We must honor our ex-president.”
His statement quickly gained attention, stirring a mix of reactions across social media platforms. While some users supported the idea, others proposed alternative institutions for such an honor.
Here are a few public responses:
- @Buchyogba: “Lol. I support this motion. Buhari deserves the honor.”
- @FranklinCh8824: “I’m telling you, bro. I hope they do so. Buhari was a patriotic citizen. He’s the best President Nigeria has ever produced.”
- @wilex_williams: “What happened to the university in Daura? He built it. They can name that after him.”
- @Adeniyi01520272: “The University of Transportation in Daura, established during his administration, would be a more fitting choice.”
- @ougwuja: “Kogi State University should be named after Buhari.”
- @FranklinCh8824 (again): “I hope they do it. He really tried for Nigerians.”
The conversation continues to evolve online as Nigerians debate how best to memorialize the former president.
