Nigerian Model Attempts to Break 41-Year-Old Catwalk Guinness World Record with 96-Hour Attempt

Nigerian model Ololade Ayelabola is attempting to break a 41-year-old Guinness World Record for the longest distance walked on a catwalk, aiming to promote inclusivity and diversity in the fashion industry while celebrating African culture.

Ololade Ayelabola, a Nigerian model, is set to make history with her ambitious attempt to break the Guinness World Record (GWR) for the longest distance walked on a catwalk. The current record, established in Ireland in 1983, has stood for over four decades. Ayelabola’s goal is to bring this prestigious title to Nigeria, aiming to challenge and redefine the modeling industry in Africa.

Inspired by Kafayat ‘Kaffy’ Shafau, a fellow Nigerian record-holder, Ayelabola’s mission goes beyond the runway. She seeks to promote inclusivity and diversity within the fashion industry, advocating for the acceptance of different body types and beauty standards. The 96-hour catwalk attempt, which began on October 1, 2024, symbolizes a movement towards a more inclusive and representative fashion industry in Africa.

Ayelabola, rejected from national fashion shows for not meeting height standards despite her 5’10” frame, is using this opportunity to push back against the rigid criteria of the modeling world. Her record attempt, themed “Inclusivity and Diversity,” will showcase the creative designs of African fashion designers, blending culture and fashion in celebration of Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day.

In her statement, Ayelabola expressed her determination to bring the record home to Nigeria, leveraging past setbacks as motivation to change the narrative. She aims to walk over 114.4 kilometers alongside other models, breaking the 41-year-old record and showcasing the beauty of African culture through fashion.

Ayelabola thanked her supporters and emphasized the importance of this event, not only as a Guinness World Record attempt but also as a platform to highlight Africa’s rich cultural heritage. She hopes to inspire change within the modeling industry and create a lasting impact on the global fashion scene.
