UNIZIK Dress Code Monitor Called Out For Allegedly Assaulting Student For Wearing Bangles

A student from the Faculty of Law, Nnamdi Azikiwe University has alleged that the university’s dress code monitor assaulted her and confiscated her phone over a dress code violation, leading to her dissatisfaction and that of her fellow students with the faculty’s handling of the situation.

A student of the Faculty of Law, Nnamdi Azikiwe University has called out the Faculty’s Dress Code Monitor, Mr. Sylvester for allegedly manhandling her and slapping her for wearing bangles to school.

The incident allegedly occured on Thursday morning, at about 10 a.m., with yhr student simply identified as Joy sitting outside a classroom when she was allegedly assaulted by Mr. Sylvester, the university’s dress code monitor.

The incident began when Mr. Sylvester approached the student and began pulling on the bangles she was wearing, which were resting on her leg. The force of his actions caused the bangles to tear and scatter. Mr. Sylvester then confiscated the student’s phone from the desk and walked away.

The student immediately followed him, pleading for the return of her phone, which she claimed was essential for her impromptu exams. In her attempt to stop Mr. Sylvester and explain her situation, she alleges that he slapped her, causing her to fall. Witnesses report that her classmates rushed to help her up as she began crying.

By the time she regained her composure, lecturers had arrived at the scene. They calmed the upset students and led them back to class before investigating the incident. One of the lecturers promised to speak to Mr. Sylvester and also reminded the student of the dress code policy regarding bangles.

Mr. Sylvester had gone upstairs to report the incident to a professor, whose identity remains unknown. The professor later returned the student’s phone and apologized on Mr. Sylvester’s behalf, insisting that he also apologize directly. Although the student reluctantly accepted her phone, she expressed her dissatisfaction, stating that there is “no justice in this faculty.”
