Nigerian Student Graduates with First-Class in Chemical Engineering, Secures Fully Funded PhD in the U.S. Without Master’s Degree

Fortune Adekogbe, a first-class Chemical Engineering graduate from the University of Lagos with a 4.78 CGPA, secured a fully funded PhD scholarship at the University of Michigan, USA, bypassing a master’s degree.

Fortune Adekogbe, a brilliant Nigerian scholar, has reached a remarkable academic achievement by earning a first-class degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Lagos, Nigeria, with an outstanding 4.78/5.00 cumulative grade point average (CGPA).

Determined to push the boundaries of his research career, Fortune applied to six international universities for postgraduate studies. His dedication and hard work paid off when he received multiple fully funded PhD offers. He ultimately accepted an offer from the University of Michigan in the United States, where he is now pursuing his doctoral studies.

At the University of Michigan, Fortune is specializing in the control and optimization of process systems, utilizing both traditional methods and data-driven approaches.

Since moving to Michigan, Fortune has been navigating the exciting yet challenging transition into his new academic environment. He described his experience so far as both rewarding and demanding, balancing orientation programs, rigorous coursework, the process of joining a research group, and adjusting to life in a new country.

Looking back on his journey, Fortune expressed heartfelt gratitude to his lecturers and professors from the University of Lagos, acknowledging that their strong recommendation letters were vital to his successful applications.

“I submitted six applications with very limited time, and I know I put a lot of pressure on them. Thankfully, most of those applications turned into fully funded offers,” he shared.

He also extended his appreciation to a professor who gave him the chance to gain valuable research experience at the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering, University of Chicago, through the RENEU program. Fortune credits this opportunity, along with guidance from experienced mentors, for helping him craft compelling Statements of Purpose (SOPs), which strengthened his PhD applications.

For Fortune, pursuing a PhD is the natural next step, aligning perfectly with his academic interests and professional aspirations. During moments of doubt about committing to research in a traditional engineering field, he often reminds himself of a quote by Professor Jordan Peterson:

“We must decide to voluntarily transform the chaos of potential into the realities of habitable order.”
