Urinrin Otite, a Nigerian from Delta State, made history as the first graduate of Lehigh University’s Master of Science in Catastrophe Modeling and Resilience program, leveraging her expertise in civil engineering and disaster risk modeling to drive innovation in resilient infrastructure development.

Urinrin Otite, a Nigerian from Delta State, has made history as the first graduate of the Master of Science in Catastrophe Modeling and Resilience program at Lehigh University, Pennsylvania.
The groundbreaking program, launched just a year ago, is part of Lehigh’s Center for Catastrophe Modeling and Resilience, which focuses on advancing research in disaster risk assessment and crisis management. Urinrin, a fourth-year PhD student in Civil Engineering at Lehigh, earned the master’s degree with an outstanding 3.83 CGPA on a 4.0 scale, describing it as an achievement she will “cherish throughout her career.”
Her academic excellence dates back to her undergraduate years at the University of Port Harcourt, where she graduated with a first-class degree in Civil Engineering and was named the Best Graduating Student in the Faculty of Engineering for the 2012 matriculating set. Her former professor, Dennis Eme, recalled her as an exceptional student with remarkable problem-solving skills.
In 2017, Urinrin co-authored a research paper on fiber-reinforced polymers, published in the International Journal of Advanced Research and Publications, and in 2018, she was selected for the EducationUSA Opportunity Funds Program, securing multiple offers from top U.S. universities, including Stanford, UC Berkeley, and Johns Hopkins, before choosing Lehigh for her PhD.
Now focused on developing a probabilistic framework to assess energy infrastructure resilience against natural disasters, Urinrin is pushing the boundaries of disaster risk modeling—an underexplored field in Nigeria. Despite the challenges of transitioning from structural design to computational analysis, she embraced new disciplines like Data Science and Probabilistic Modeling, making history as the first graduate of this pioneering program.
Looking ahead, she hopes to apply her expertise in catastrophe modeling and civil engineering to develop innovative disaster risk management strategies, helping build more resilient infrastructure worldwide.
With a legacy of academic excellence and groundbreaking achievements, Urinrin Otite is not just a scholar—she is a trailblazer shaping the future of catastrophe modeling and resilience.
