Betty Olanrewaju overcame a rocky start at OAU, transforming her GPA from 1.68 in her first year to graduate with a 4.04 honors degree in Materials Engineering through resilience, disciplined study, and active leadership.

Betty Olanrewaju, a determined Nigerian student, faced a challenging start at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, when she scored a low 1.68 GPA in her first year of Materials Engineering. The initial shock was daunting, and the reality of her academic struggles could have easily discouraged her. However, Betty chose not to be defined by her early setbacks. Instead, she used the experience as motivation to rethink her approach to learning and personal development.
Determined to improve, Betty began attending tutorials regularly, actively participating in group discussions, and applying more effective study techniques. She shifted her focus from merely attending lectures to truly understanding the material and mastering the skills required in her field. This new approach, combined with her resilience and discipline, allowed her to steadily improve her performance. By the end of her second year, her GPA had risen to 3.01, a significant turnaround from her initial struggles.
Betty’s transformation continued throughout her undergraduate journey. She set high standards for herself, aiming consistently for first-class semester results. Her commitment paid off, as she recorded five first-class GPAs in her final six semesters and achieved a remarkable cumulative GPA of 4.04, earning a Second Class Upper Division in Materials Engineering. Her academic record included an impressive tally of 38 As, 19 Bs, 13 Cs, 2 Ds, and 4 Es, highlighting not only her excellence but also her consistent effort and perseverance.
Beyond academics, Betty actively engaged in leadership and volunteer roles. She served in several positions within the Association of Materials Science and Engineering Students at OAU, including Electoral Member and Electoral Chairman, and even contributed in unconventional roles such as serving as a Janitor. These experiences helped her develop time management, teamwork, and leadership skills while reinforcing her commitment to service.
Betty’s remarkable achievements culminated in her induction as a Graduate Member of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), marking her transition from a struggling student to a recognized professional engineer. Her journey reflects resilience, hard work, and determination, serving as an inspiring example for students facing academic challenges. Betty Olanrewaju’s story proves that with focus, perseverance, and self-belief, it is possible to overcome early difficulties and achieve outstanding success.
