NYSC Exclusion Sparks Outrage Among HND Graduates

Thousands of Nigerian HND graduates with part-time ND backgrounds are excluded from NYSC mobilisation, sparking outrage and calls for intervention despite completing their HND full-time .

Thousands of HND graduates with part-time ND backgrounds are excluded from NYSC, sparking frustration and outrage. Despite completing their HND full-time, they’re denied mobilisation, affecting job prospects and further education .

Kausarat Abidemi, a Microbiology graduate, was excluded despite completing her HND full-time. “We have the right to serve,” she said, adding that juniors are being mobilised while seniors are left out.

The NYSC cites a 2004 Act, but lawyers argue it’s discriminatory. Femi Falana SAN says the NYSC has no basis to question academic pathways, while Niyi Aborisade calls for President Tinubu’s intervention.

Affected graduates demand justice, citing Minister Tunji Alausa’s assurance of eligibility. The NYSC Lagos coordinator promises resolution, saying “NYSC won’t deliberately deny anyone’s right to serve”. What’s your take on this issue?

The exclusion has far-reaching consequences, with graduates losing job opportunities and struggling with further education. Abidemi lost a job offer due to the lack of an NYSC certificate, while others face poor wages or stalled applications.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has condemned the exclusion, demanding the NYSC correct the misclassification and mobilise eligible graduates. Quadri Abduraheem, NANS chairman, calls it a “betrayal of trust and violation of rights”.

The controversy highlights the need for clarity on NYSC eligibility criteria. While the Ministry of Education says the issue is resolved, graduates remain excluded, sparking calls for urgent intervention.

The outcome of this saga remains uncertain, but affected graduates are determined to fight for their rights. As one graduate put it, “We are full-time HND graduates; we should be eligible to serve”. What’s next for these graduates?
