NYSC Member Apologizes for Calling Lagos a “Smelly State” in Viral Video

NYSC member Ushie Uguamaye, known as Raye, apologized for calling Lagos a “smelly state” in a viral video, clarifying that her remarks were part of a broader initiative to highlight Nigeria’s economic struggles.

A National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member based in Lagos, Ushie Uguamaye, also known as Raye, has issued an apology after a viral video in which she criticized the state’s environment sparked controversy.

In a statement shared on Instagram on Monday, Raye acknowledged that her words may have offended Lagos residents and expressed regret for how she phrased her observations. She clarified that her intention was not to insult Lagosians but to share her personal experience as a visitor.

“I Didn’t Mean to Disrespect Lagos”

Raye explained that her comment was part of a 30-day rant challenge, an initiative aimed at highlighting pressing issues in Nigeria.

“I want to first of all state that I am sorry to the people who were born and raised in Lagos State if you feel offended by what I said. I am sorry,” she wrote.

“But as a visitor here, I could tell there was a difference in the atmosphere and air quality. If the way I put it triggered your emotions and your love for your birth state, I am sorry. I didn’t mean to talk down on Lagos.”

She further revealed that she had initially planned to post 20 videos discussing various societal issues, hoping to spark conversations. However, the first video quickly gained traction, with many Nigerians resonating with her frustrations.

Beyond her remarks about Lagos, Raye also highlighted the financial struggles many young Nigerians face, stating that despite working over 45 hours a week, she still finds it difficult to afford leisure activities.

“My target was to make at least 20 videos complaining until I was heard. Lucky for me, I didn’t even have to get to Day 2 because a lot of us were actually angry, and Day 1 was enough for people to join me.”

“I work 45+ hours a week and should be able to afford to hang out with my friends every weekend. However, I can’t. But how many of us can actually afford that in reality?”

Raye urged Nigerians to remain focused on demanding better living conditions rather than getting distracted by momentary controversies.

“I encourage all of us to ask for what we believe we deserve. I know distractions will take over again soon, but if we stay committed to asking for better, we will get better.”

Her viral video, in which she criticized President Bola Tinubu over the country’s economic hardship and inflation, has sparked widespread debate online. While some Nigerians supported her stance, others condemned her choice of words, particularly her description of Lagos as a “smelly state.”
