The Federal Government has announced plans to replace the NYSC’s traditional khaki uniform with Adire attire as part of wider reforms aimed at modernising the 53-year-old national service scheme.

The Federal Government has announced plans to replace the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) traditional khaki uniform with attire made from Adire fabric as part of a broad reform programme for the 53-year-old national service scheme.
The proposed change represents one of the most significant visual transformations in the history of the NYSC since the programme was established. For decades, the khaki uniform has served as the official attire worn by corps members during orientation exercises, official assignments, and other service-related activities across the country.
According to the government, the replacement of the khaki uniform forms part of a wider package of reforms designed to modernise the NYSC and give the scheme a refreshed identity. The initiative is intended to align the programme with the administration’s broader efforts to review and improve various aspects of national youth development.
The planned adoption of Adire fabric is also expected to promote Nigeria’s indigenous textile industry while showcasing a traditional fabric that reflects the country’s cultural heritage. Adire, which is widely recognised as a symbol of Nigerian craftsmanship, has gained increasing national and international recognition in recent years.
Although the government has confirmed the proposed uniform change, additional details regarding its implementation, including when the new attire will be introduced and how the transition from the existing khaki uniform will be carried out, have not yet been officially announced.
The announcement has generated public interest, as many Nigerians await further information about the broader reforms expected to reshape the NYSC scheme in the coming years.
