FG Launches STEMM Up Grant to Spark Student Innovation in Tertiary Institutions

The Federal Government of Nigeria has set to unveil “STEMM UP Grant” to ignite student innovation in tertiary institutions

The Federal Government is set to launch the STEMM Up Grant, formally known as the Sciences, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medical Sciences Student Venture Capital Grant (S-VCG), aimed at empowering students in tertiary institutions to develop scalable, job-creating ventures.

Unveiling in August by the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, CON, the initiative was announced during a stakeholder engagement in Abuja, which brought together Vice Chancellors, Provosts, Rectors, student leaders, academics, and development partners.

“This is more than a grant it’s a launchpad for bold innovation,” Dr. Alausa stated. “We are equipping students to create transformative solutions in tech, medicine, agriculture, and green energy.”

Targeting 300-level and above students in STEMM disciplines, each selected project may receive up to ₦50 million in startup funding, including mentorship, incubation, and business support. The program is implemented in partnership with the Bank of Industry (BOI) to ensure transparency and impact.

Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad described it as a strategic investment in Nigeria’s knowledge economy, aligning with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda on youth empowerment and economic development.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to inclusive rollout, strong monitoring, and measurable impact across Nigeria’s higher education institutions.
