Peter Obi Provides Borehole, Laboratory, and Computers to Chibok Girls’ School, Criticizes Government Spending

Peter Obi has donated a borehole, solar power, a science lab, and computers worth N6 million to Chibok Girls’ Secondary School while criticizing the Nigerian government for prioritizing extravagant spending over essential education needs.

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has once again called out the Nigerian government for misallocating public funds—this time in contrast to a personal initiative supporting education in Chibok, Borno State.

Speaking in Abuja, Obi announced his facilitation of a N6 million development package for Government Girls Secondary School in Chibok. The donation includes a borehole, solar power supply, a science laboratory, and computers. He emphasized that contributions to education should not be seen as charity but as critical investments in the nation’s future.

A statement by Ibrahim Umar of the Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR) quoted Obi as condemning the Federal Capital Territory Administration’s recent expenditure of N39 billion on the renovation of the International Conference Centre (ICC). Obi described the renovation as unnecessary, especially when basic educational needs remain unmet across the country.

“Spending N39 billion to refurbish an already functional facility, while students lack access to computers and teachers go unpaid, is a glaring example of poor governance,” Obi said. “That amount could have provided thousands of computers to empower our children—the future leaders.”

He recalled his tenure as Anambra State governor, where access to technology was a major focus. “I made sure our students used computers—even if it was ten students per unit. That experience changed their lives.”

Obi also decried the ongoing teachers’ strike in the FCT, caused by unpaid salaries. “If a part of Nigeria is too unsafe to visit, then the entire country is unsafe,” he added, noting he had to cancel plans to personally deliver the equipment in Chibok due to security concerns.

The project was facilitated by well-known activist Aisha Yesufu, who responded to a request from the Chibok community on May 31, seeking to improve computer literacy in the school. Upon hearing of the situation, Obi promptly committed to supporting the initiative.

The donation, which includes ten laptops and two laser printers, was received on behalf of the school by local leader Dauda Iliya. He assured the donors that the equipment would be put to effective use for the benefit of the students.
