Philanthropist and traditional leader Abubakar Atiku donated a 25-year-old crocodile to the University of Ilorin Zoological Garden, emphasizing cultural heritage and strengthening ties between the University and its host community.

Abubakar Atiku, a prominent philanthropist and traditional leader, has donated a 25-year-old crocodile valued at millions of Naira to the University of Ilorin Zoological Garden.

According to a bulletin released by the University on Monday, this generous contribution underscores Mr. Atiku’s commitment to fostering cultural heritage and strengthening community ties.

Mr. Atiku, the Balogun Fulani of Ilorin, emphasized the cultural and symbolic significance of crocodile rearing, describing it as both a royal tradition and a source of attraction. He noted that the donation serves as a bridge between the University and its host community, further solidifying their long-standing relationship.

The traditional leader also highlighted his family’s history of crocodile rearing, stating that this donation reflects their dedication to preserving cultural heritage. The crocodile, estimated to be 25 years old, is expected to enhance the diverse collection of animals at the UNILORIN Zoo.

Oyeyemi Jekayinfa, Chairperson of the UNILORIN Zoological Garden Board, expressed gratitude for the donation, describing it as a “welcome development.” She praised the ongoing collaboration between the University and its host community, which continues to yield positive outcomes.

Ms. Jekayinfa invited the public to visit the zoo, emphasizing its role in promoting tourism and education.

Olatunji Yusuf, General Manager of the UNILORIN Zoo, lauded Mr. Atiku’s unique contribution, calling it a milestone in the zoo’s history. He highlighted the zoo’s standout features, such as its serene natural environment, suspended bridge, and skilled staff.

“The Ilorin community can take pride in its rich cultural heritage, and the University’s zoological garden will remain a cherished destination for education and recreation,” Mr. Yusuf added.
