Police Arrest Two Railway Workers Over Alleged Assault on UI Lecturer

Police in Oyo State arrested two railway workers and are searching for a third after they allegedly assaulted a University of Ibadan lecturer at the Obafemi Awolowo Railway Station in Moniya.

Police in Oyo State have arrested two workers of the Nigerian Railway Corporation over the alleged assault of a lecturer from University of Ibadan. A third suspect linked to the incident is currently on the run.

The victim, Mr. Mikail Abdulsalam, a lecturer in the Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies at the university, was reportedly attacked on Wednesday morning at the Obafemi Awolowo Railway Station.

According to eyewitnesses, Abdulsalam had stopped his car at the station to drop off his sister, who was about to travel by train to Lagos. While at the station, some railway workers allegedly confronted and assaulted him despite his calm behaviour. Witnesses said the attackers beat him until the situation drew the attention of security operatives.

The case was later reported to the Moniya Division of the Nigeria Police Force. Sources said the lecturer sustained injuries during the attack and later spoke to journalists, describing the incident as both painful and shocking.

Confirming the development, the Public Relations Officer of the Oyo State Police Command, Mr. Olayinka Ayanlade, said two suspects had been arrested and were currently in police custody, while another suspect managed to escape.

He added that investigations had begun and that efforts were underway to apprehend the fleeing suspect.

The incident has generated public anger among residents and members of the academic community, with many expressing concern about the behaviour of railway personnel and the safety of people using public transport facilities.
