The police have detained 12 individuals in connection with the murder of a student from Ajayi Crowther University in Oyo State.

The deceased, accused of stealing a phone and using the proceeds to place bets on a sports website, has led the university to declare three days of mourning and promise increased security measures.

Ajayi Crowther University management announced that 20 suspects tied to the student’s death have been handed over to local authorities for investigation.

Vice-Chancellor Timothy Adebayo confirmed that 12 of these suspects are now in police custody as the investigation proceeds. All involved students have been expelled.

Akpo Alex, a 200-level Mechanical Engineering student, was implicated in the theft, reportedly transferring money from the sold phone to a betting site.

The university has expelled all involved in the lynching, who await legal proceedings. A porter on duty at the time has also been detained.

Adebayo stated: “The university has declared a three-day mourning period for students, including fasting and prayers for management, staff, and representatives of the church overseeing the school from Wednesday to Sunday. The school has learned from this incident and will enhance security and monitoring, encouraging students to report any concerns to the vice-chancellor and other management staff.”
