Clinical lecturers at Nnamdi Azikiwe University’s Medical School have shut down the institution in protest over their exclusion from the Vice Chancellor selection process due to a PhD requirement, arguing that their medical Fellowships are equivalent, and will continue their strike until the issue is resolved.

The Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) Medical School in Nnewi has been shut down as clinical lecturers, under the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN), continue their strike over the exclusion of their members from the Vice Chancellor (VC) selection process.
The lecturers are protesting a requirement in the VC job advertisement that candidates must hold a PhD, which disqualifies clinical lecturers who hold Fellowships in various medical fields, which they argue are equivalent to a PhD.
Despite raising their concerns in a letter to Acting VC Prof. Carol Arinze-Umeobi on August 2, 2024, the university has yet to respond, prolonging the strike.
MDCAN Secretary, Dr. Sunday Oriji, stated that the medical school will remain closed until the issue is resolved, criticizing the exclusion as a deviation from past VC advertisements and demanding the university address the perceived injustice.
