A man shared his sister’s emotional decision to quit university in her third year due to academic struggles and use her school fees to start a baking business, sparking debate over education versus entrepreneurship.

A man has opened up about a difficult family situation involving his younger sister, who is considering leaving university in her third year to focus on building a baking business.
The story, which gained attention on social media this week, has triggered discussions about education, career decisions, and family expectations within Nigeria’s higher education system.
According to him, his sister called him while crying, explaining that she no longer understands her course and feels overwhelmed at the 300 level stage of her studies. She expressed a strong desire to withdraw from school.
She also asked that the family give her the money meant for her final year school fees so she could invest it in her baking business, adding that she has already started learning the trade.
The man admitted he did not know how to present such a request to their mother and insisted that his sister should speak to her directly about her decision.
He explained that the situation has created emotional strain, as it involves balancing his sister’s personal ambitions with family expectations regarding completing her university education.
The incident has also renewed conversations about a rising trend where students reconsider traditional academic paths in favour of entrepreneurship.
Similar situations have been observed in recent years, with some Nigerian students choosing to leave university to pursue skills-based businesses such as fashion design and food production, often driven by concerns about unemployment after graduation.
