A female student in Odisha suffered 95% burns after setting herself on fire, allegedly due to prolonged sexual harassment by her teacher and the college authorities’ inaction despite her formal complaint.

A deeply disturbing and tragic incident has unfolded in Balasore, Odisha, where a female student suffered severe 95% burn injuries after setting herself on fire on her college campus in a desperate act of protest against prolonged sexual harassment. The incident is allegedly linked to the egregious failure of her teacher, Samir Kumar Sahu, to cease his predatory behavior and the college authorities’ inaction, despite her formal complaint.
Background of the Incident
The student, enrolled in the integrated B.Ed program at Fakir Mohan College, had lodged a formal complaint on July 1, accusing Sahu of repeatedly demanding sexual favors and threatening to ruin her future if she refused. Despite assurances of action within seven days, no concrete steps were taken by the college authorities to address her grievances or protect her from further harassment, leading to the student’s desperate and tragic act.
The Incident
On Saturday, during a student protest at the college gate, the victim reportedly ran toward a building near the principal’s office, poured petrol on herself, and set herself on fire in a shocking display of anguish and despair. A fellow student who attempted to rescue her sustained severe 70% burns in the process, highlighting the gravity and unpredictability of the situation.
Aftermath
Following the incident, authorities swiftly arrested the teacher and suspended both him and the college principal, signaling a belated recognition of the severity of the situation. Odisha’s Higher Education Minister confirmed that strict action would be taken against those found responsible, and investigations are ongoing, with police collecting evidence from the scene to build a robust case.
Current Status
Both the woman and the student who tried to save her are currently receiving treatment in a bid to save their lives. The incident has sparked widespread concern and outrage, highlighting the urgent need for swift and decisive action in cases of alleged sexual harassment to prevent such tragedies and ensure justice for victims.
