Students Protest in Kogi After Tragic Accident Kills Seven FUL Students and Bus Driver

Students of the Federal University Lokoja (FUL) are protesting after a tragic accident involving a truck and a school shuttle bus killed seven students and a bus driver, demanding stricter road safety measures to prevent future incidents.

Students of the Federal University Lokoja (FUL), Kogi State, have launched a massive protest following a fatal road accident that claimed the lives of seven students and a bus driver.

The accident occurred on Monday, February 18, at around 2:30 PM when an articulated truck carrying wood and jerrycans of palm oil lost control and crashed into a school shuttle bus filled with students. Eyewitnesses described the impact as devastating, with all eight victims dying on the spot.

In response, enraged students took to the streets on Tuesday and continued their demonstration into Wednesday morning, blocking roads leading to the university and demanding immediate government action to improve road safety. They specifically called for restrictions on heavy-duty trucks operating during the daytime to prevent future tragedies.

Emergency responders, including officers from the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), were deployed to the scene to rescue trapped victims. Kogi State FRSC Sector Commander, Samuel Oyedeji, confirmed that while the exact number of casualties was still being assessed, several bodies were taken to the morgue, and the injured were rushed to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Lokoja, and Kogi State Specialist Hospital for treatment.

As tensions remain high, the Kogi State Deputy Governor visited the university entrance to sympathize with the grieving students and the university community. However, students have vowed to continue their protest until concrete measures are taken to prevent further accidents.
